A study committee examining the Department of Child Services wants the General Assembly to establish two, more permanent groups to oversee how the DCS and other agencies are handling child welfare issues in the state.
A report unanimously approved by the study committee Tuesday recommends the creation of a DCS Oversight Committee. Made up of legislators, judges, attorneys and DCS officials, Markle Republican Senator Travis Holdman said the committee would continue the work of the study committee.
The new Office of Management and Budget director under Governor-elect Mike Pence is a Daniels administration veteran.
Pence tabbed Chris Atkins Monday to head the Office of Management and Budget beginning in January. Atkins was policy director to Pence during the campaign and helped develop Pence’s Roadmap for Indiana.
Prior to joining the Pence campaign, Atkins served under Governor Mitch Daniels as general counsel and policy advisor in the OMB, helping Daniels create and implement property and corporate tax reform.
The Indiana Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a lawsuit challenging the state’s school voucher program Wednesday, but at least one analyst says the challenge is facing an uphill battle.
Earlier this year, Marion Superior Court Judge Michael Keele denied a school voucher challenge that was brought by teachers and parents and backed by the Indiana State Teachers Association. The Supreme Court decided to take the case on appeal directly, rather than allowing the state Court of Appeals to hear it first.
