The 118th Indiana General Assembly discusses impending challenges

As members were sworn in Tuesday, leaders of Indiana’s House and Senate warned of obstacles ahead for the 118th Indiana General Assembly.

Republicans hold super majorities in both houses for the next two years, rendering Democrats relatively powerless in the legislative process. 

But Senate President Pro Tem David Long preached bipartisanship to his chamber as he cautioned about the obstacles the legislature faces.

Indiana's unemployment rate drops in October

Indiana’s private sector added 7,700 jobs last month and lowered its unemployment rate to 8%.

The unemployment rate fell 0.2% in October, the largest single month drop since April.  It also marked a decrease for the second consecutive month after gaining or holding steady for six months.

Voucher challenge comes up this week

The Indiana Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a lawsuit challenging the state’s school voucher program Wednesday, but at least one analyst says the challenge is facing an uphill battle.

Earlier this year, Marion Superior Court Judge Michael Keele denied a school voucher challenge that was brought by teachers and parents and backed by the Indiana State Teachers Association.  The Supreme Court decided to take the case on appeal directly, rather than allowing the state Court of Appeals to hear it first.

Sweetwater breaks ground on new facility

Officials break ground on Sweetwater's new facility Wednesday afternoon.

Sweetwater Sound broke ground Wednesday on its expansion at the company’s headquarters along US 30.

Sweetwater President Chuck Surack joined Governor Mitch Daniels, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, and Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters at the event.

Surack says Sweetwater will add more than 300 employees over the next four years, with an eye toward hiring even more if business keeps booming.

Surack says a business model focusing on customer service has kept Sweetwater expanding, but his location in Northeastern Indiana has been key, as well.

Healthcare policy experts say House Speaker Brian Bosma’s decision to appoint a doctor to lead the Indiana House Ways and Means committee is no coincidence. The state will soon face tough decisions about how to implement the affordable care act during upcoming budget talks.

Bosma made it clear Tuesday he recognizes the growing impact healthcare will have on the state budget as he introduced the new chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

Remembering a fallen firefighter, father, and husband

Twenty-six year old Fort Wayne Firefighter  Mark A. Haudenschild II died on Sunday while responding to a brush fire. 

Surrounded by  members of the Washington Township Fire Department on Wednesday, Janet Haudenschild described her marriage to her late husband, the children they raised together, and the type of man he was.

Janet described her late husband as a man who was caring, compassionate, and loving. Married for over five years, she said that firefighting was something her husband had always wanted to do.
